Teaching Philosophy

I believe that every student has unlimited potential to be anything they want to be.  My job as an educator is not to handicap any child from becoming their greatest, but to help them see the potential within their selves.  To do this I believe adolescent students need to be challenged and need consistent and frequent reinforcements.

From my students, I demand respect and also give respect.  I respond to my students in a way that they see I have value in what they have to say.  My students, at the beginning of every 9 weeks, know they have as much to offer me as I have to offer them.  I hold very high standards for all my students and teach them not to put limitations on their lives.

My teaching style is heavily influenced by the social constructivist theory.  This is a theory that states children learn more effectively through collaboration.  With this theory, the process of engagement with others enables children to refine their thinking or their performance to make it more effective.  Hence, for the child, the development of articulation of ideas is central to learning.  This is why in my classroom the majority of what my students do is group work.  To meet all learning types I mix group work activities, with lectures using PowerPoint Presentations, some individual assignments, projects, assessments, and vigorous note taking.

I approach and ask my students to approach my class just as they would any academic class.  The information my students learn in my class can help prolong their lives, save lives and get the most out of life by having a sound and healthy body.  This is done by teaching students how to effectively have a combination of great social, mental, emotional and physical health.
